                Frequently Asked Questions.......

What is hypnosis?  -   Hypnosis is a state of concentration and relaxation that usually happens in everyone’s typical day.  One is in a state of self- hypnosis when “absorbed” in a TV program, daydreaming, and doing repetitive activities.  Hypnotherapy is where a therapist provides suggestions to create a kind of guided relaxation, where the client experiences ideas more clearly, usually resulting in a greater awareness.  Shifts in attitude toward particular subject matters can occur.  To obtain therapeutic results, the only requirement is that the client have a true desire for change and a belief in a Higher Power.

While hypnotized, can one do things that are against one’s beliefs and morals?  -   No.  The client is always conscious during the session; the conscious mind is merely stepping to the side to allow the unconscious mind to do its work.  In entertainment venues, people will usually do silly things because their purpose for being there is to have a good time.  In hypnotherapy, a client will not engage in any activity they do not agree with, any more than at any other time during their day.

Can the memory of a person be erased?   -   No.  If the client wishes to forget a particular thing, it can be done through post-hypnotic suggestion; however it wears off according the client’s wishes.  But if one wants to remember while undergoing hypnosis, he/she will do so.  Hypnotherapy can uncover unconscious memories that create our thoughts, behaviors and feelings.  A certified hypnotherapist can be very effective in diffusing an unpleasant memory, robbing it of its power over the individual.

Is everyone able to be hypnotized?  -  Yes, but only if one is in good psychological and physiological health, and is able to relax and concentrate.  Motivation is the key.  If one is willing to undergo hypnosis, he/she is able to do so.  But if one is not prepared to go with the process, the necessary components of relaxation and concentration will not be present, and hypnosis cannot take place.

Does hypnosis make one unconscious or asleep?  -  No.  Although hypnosis is very relaxing, it creates a hyper-awareness of both the environment surrounding the person as well as the inner workings of the mind.  The brain wave patterns of one in hypnosis fall roughly between those of being awake and asleep.  If one is very tired and/or sleep-deprived, however, sleep may surface during the session and the client can be awakened.  Memory recall during hypnosis is impossible while asleep.  There are situations where an individual who is listening to a self-hypnosis tape falls out of hypnosis into sleep; the tape suggestions can still be absorbed.
